The most successful companies use search engine marketing because they want to be easily found by consumers. With the advent of the information age, the virtual sale force offered by the internet is fully paid for once the website is fully set up and running. Now potential customers can find out information 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, unlike before when a business was only to do this when open.

There are a number of ways to optimise search engine marketing, for any firm desiring a presence on the world wide web. One is with Google adwords. In this case, advertisers pay for a certain keyword or phrase. They write a short ad and “bid” on it to be shown when searchers type this information in the search window. The higher the bid, the more likely it will end up on page one. Companies only pay when the ad is clicked on, so this is known as pay per click (ppc). It can be extremely effective when done properly.

The other way to get customers to the website is search engine optimisation. An address is made to look better to the search engines by placing keywords in the title of the site, into any blog posts, and in the tags used to describe a post (short article of information). Smart firms increase their exposure in this way.

Successful enterprises use both types of search engine marketing to attract new customers and increase their profits at the same time.
